The Church of St. Oliver Plunkett, Boora, was built on the site of the old school in the townland of Leabeg, eight miles from Ferbane on the road to Tullamore. The Dedication Ceremony was performed by Bishop Cahal Daly, assisted by Cardinal John Cody, Archbishop of Chicago, on Sunday 19th September 1976. The church, octagonal in shape, was built to meet the needs of the Bord na Móna workers, whose numbers had grown significantly during those years. The church was dedicated to St.Oliver Plunkett who had been canonized in Rome in the previous year (1975)
